Here’s an article espousing the benefits of the ‘Paleo Diet’. This is simply the healthy diet of our ancestors and existing hunter-gatherer people today. In our clinic, we call it the Innate Diet. ‘Innate’ means ‘inborn’ or ‘genetically congruent’. In other words, it is the diet that matches what our genes need to express health, happiness and vitality! Very cool stuff, since we are all looking for a little more of that in life, right?

Also, I believe it is the diet God intended for us to eat, despite what the bible says. To me, the bible is a spiritual guide, not necessarily a nutrition guide. By the way, the bible was written after the agricultural revolution was in full swing, so you will find grains being a staple of the biblical diet.

Over the past 10,000 years, humans have dramatically changed their diet away from what is genetically congruent.

We now know that grains are NOT the best food for a human to be eating.  They are low in nutrient value but high in caloric value.  Also, they come with more toxins and acidity.  Yes, you can survive with grains, but you will suffer from deficiency and toxicity issues without a doubt.

There are some existing hunter-gatherer populations today that eat a lot of grains and scientists have found that their bodies are riddled with much more osteoporosis and osteoarthritis!  Luckily, they get plenty of exercise, so their muscle strength keeps them functioning quite well, despite their bones degenerating.

Here’s the article!

Vitamin D Prevents Cancer and Autoimmune Diseases

Here’s a quick news article talking about recent research on Vitamin D, epigenetics and disease!

http://www.NaturalNews.com/029605_vitamin_d_prevention.html

Vitamin D is produced in your skin when it is exposed to sunlight. We have found that due to our increased lifestyle of staying indoors for so many hours, we must supplement with Vitamin D. We definitely recommend it for everyone, everyday, for life… especially here in Oregon.

We will soon be carrying a great Vitamin D supplement system from Dr. Chestnut’s company Innate Choice. Here are a couple videos with Dr. Chestnut explaining all about Vitamin D.

“You Can Still Drink Your Chocolate Milk.”

Changing to a healthier lifestyle can come with some challenges.  Yes, it can be a “challenge” to prepare whole foods compared to going through the drive through at a fast phood joint.  Yes, it can be a “challenge” to go for a walk everyday when you are used to sitting all day.   Yes, it can be a “challenge” to think you are a wonderful person when you are used to telling yourself you are no good.

Almost all these “challenges” that you have with getting healthier are fixed by going internal.  99.9% of the time, the solutions for these problems are internal, not external.   The fix is a simple change in perception.  Simply look at the challenge differently. Change the angle, switch the filter, try a different lens – you’ve got to change the way you see things if you are going to change your behaviors.

I have a client who recently shared that one of the things he loves about the Innate LifestyleTM Program is that you don’t change your health by taking away all the bad stuff and depriving yourself of what you have grown to “love”.  Instead, you simply begin by adding more good things.  So, you add an apple to the donut you are eating.  You add a glass of water to the cup of coffee you are drinking.  You add a 10 minute walk to the couch potatoing you are doing.  Get the point?

The rule is, you never give up the bad stuff until you are 100% willing and ready.

Anyways, this guy has completely transformed his health and his life over the past year.  He has made tremendous changes in his eating habits and the amount of exercise he is getting.  Chronic disease is literally melting away with his transformation!  He has truly become a Wellness Warrior!

The thing is – it all started with him seeing things differently.  It started with a change in perception.  It started with him seeing that he could get very healthy without depriving himself.  He could still drink his chocolate milk.

Change your perception, change your life!

New Life

My wife, Crystel, is doing well after laparoscopic surgery on June 17th.    It turned out to be a large, fluid-filled cyst that had developed on her right fallopian tube.  Dr. Harmon said the cyst had become twisted around the tube, thus the extreme pain.  She ended up removing the right fallopian tube along with the cyst.  Everything went very smooth and she is now fully recovered!  Crystel told me that the whole experience has given her a new appreciation for her life and her health… New Life.

I recently had the honor of working on a 3-week-old baby girl.  Her parents brought her in because she was not gaining weight like she should have been.  They heard from a friend that chiropractic could help.  She just wasn’t very interested in eating much and was looking pretty skinny.  Technically, she was suffering from “Failure to Thrive Syndrome”, where a baby does not gain sufficient weight after birth.

Side Note: Chiropractic care can be a fantastic wellness intervention for babies and kids.  It is not about back pain here.  It is about a properly functioning nervous system and body.  Stress from the birth process can cause joints and muscles to malfunction which interferes with the way the nerves are firing.  Adjustments on babies are usually done with gentle stretching and light pressure or tapping at specific spinal levels – it’s not like an adult adjustment!!

Anyways, I checked this baby girl and found that her spine was not bending the way it normally should to the right.  I found some core tension in her spine which required a gentle stretch to release.  Then I found 2 vertebral levels of dysfunction – one in her mid back and one in her low back.  These were adjusted with light pressure and some light tapping.  I re-checked her spine at the end of the adjustment and found that it was now bending to the right exactly the way it should.  Great!  Now, the nerves in those areas that control digestion should start working better.

Last week, the mother brought her in for a follow-up and was so excited to say that her baby had begun eating better and had “caught-up” to a healthy weight range!  I did a quick check on baby and everything looked great- I did not find anything that needed to be adjusted.  AWESOME!!  This baby girl is now able to better express her God-given potential for health… New Life.

We are all vulnerable to the stresses of the modern world and sometimes we need a little help dealing with it.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help!  Sometimes we need a health professional to remove or add something to our lives that gives us… New Life.

First-Hand Experience

Crystel & I celebrating her birthday last Friday night.

Life brought me a first-hand experience on how our Health is our most important asset.

My wife began having pain in her right lower abdomen on Saturday morning.  It was a dull ache that was radiating to her lower back.  She described is as feeling like she was in labor.  It continued all day Saturday and Sunday, then got very, very bad on Monday morning.  The pain brought her to tears… and this is a woman who delivered both our kids drug-free and does Group Power at the Courthouse Athletic Club 3 days a week!  Digestive issue?  Appendix?  IUD problem?  Ovarian Cyst?  Infection?  Cancer?  All the possibilities were running through my head.  I canceled all appointments at my clinic and rushed home to take her to the E.R.  Everything falls to the wayside, when we, or someone we love, suddenly begins to lose their health.

Example of ovarian cyst.

We spent 6 hours at the E.R. that day. We found out via ultrasound that Crystel had a softball-sized cyst on her right ovary.  That monstrous cyst was pushing into all kinds of tissues causing the pressure and pain.  Also, we were able to get her pain under control with meds… thank goodness!  So, we had a diagnosis and we had control of her pain.  She is now scheduled for laparoscopic surgery on Thursday (tomorrow) morning to remove the cyst.  Our medical system is amazing at dealing with emergencies such as this… they can find the “fire” and “put it out”.

From a wellness perspective, the ultimate question is “What led to the fire in the first place?”  Why did the cells in her right ovary function in an abnormal way and allow this cyst to grow to such size?  How can this be prevented from happening in the future?  The answer is almost always STRESS from toxicity and deficiency – physical, chemical, and emotional toxicity & deficiency.

The lifestyle choices we make each day have the greatest impact on the level of toxicity and deficiency to our cells.  Learning how to create physical, chemical, and emotional purity & sufficiency with our lifestyle choices gives us the best chance at preventing  “health fires” in the first place.

P.S.  Thanks for all the prayers as Crystel goes through this!

Our Most Important Asset

I’ll go out on a limb and say, “Health is our most important asset.”  Seriously, can you think of anything more important than the physical, emotional, and spiritual health of yourself or those you love?

Nothing comes close to health.  Sadly, I’m seeing more and more people not just losing their health, but losing CONTROL of their health.  “Control”, that’s the key.  If you feel like you have no control over whether you get sick or stay well, then you have no hope of ever being truly healthy.

My blog will focus on teaching you how to take control of your health so that you can live a life full of happiness, vitality and longevity.  Enjoy!
